If you’ve ever watched the Olympic shooting events and wondered what the sport actually involves — or whether you could try it yourself — here’s a quick, no-jargon introduction to 10m air pistol shooting, India’s most popular entry point into competitive shooting.
The basics
You stand exactly 10 metres away from a paper target. The full target is about the size of a dinner plate, but the bullseye — the inner “10 ring” — is just 11.5 mm wide, roughly the size of a 5-rupee coin. From that distance, it looks like a tiny dot.
You fire a single 4.5 mm pellet from a precision air pistol, held in one hand, with no rest. A perfect shot scores 10. A full match of 60 shots can score up to 600.
Why beginners love it
- No firearm licence is needed for standard air pistols, so most academies can welcome shooters from around 10–12 years of age upwards.
- It builds focus, breath control and emotional steadiness — life skills that carry over into studies, defence-academy entrance training, and any high-pressure work.
- The cost of trying it out is far lower than people assume — usually less than a movie ticket for a first trial session.
